Her brother died, Thutmose II. She took power because her step son(which was also her nephew) was a small child. She was not considered a formal pharaoh until after Thutmose III(The step son) was fit to rule. Now historians don't know why she actually became a pharaoh but technically she was the co-pharaoh.
