OpenStudy (madeleine2):

describe the process in writing the equation of a line given two points?

OpenStudy (davejavous):

The two points have the coordinates: \[ P_1 = (x_1, y_1)\] and \[P_2 = (x_2, y_2)\] The first thing to do is find the gradient (called m) using the formula: \[ m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}\] Then substitute the gradient and a set of coordinates into the equationn: \[y - y_1 = m(x-x_1)\] Multiply out of the bracket and rearrange to put the equation in the form: \[y=mx +c\]
