heavily influenced and inspired by classical antiquities, Michelangelo also became involved in a scheme to pass off one of his sculptures, a marble cupid, as an ancient work. Allegedly, he was told by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de Medici to make it look as though it had been dug up, so he could sell it in Rome.
among other things, a pretty big sculpture of "David" which is somewhere in Italy. A lot of M's art work is, shall we say, "butch". Looking at the physiques of the images ... they're nt exactly "life like". One of his most famous masterpieces was the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, poss in St Peter's Basilica, Roma, Italia. Adam is, well, he's hunky shall we say. And the posing is very stylised - contrast with that of Caravaggio. I think M and Leonardo were homosexual, which may have helped influence the models they'd use for their work (and maybe a shortage of female models ?). Good book is "The Story of Art" by EH Gombrich, Phaidon Press.
