The Townshend Acts

The Townshend Acts were introduced to the British Parliament by Charles Townshend in 1767. These acts suspended the New York Legislature and imposed taxes in order to import tea, glass, lead, paint, and paper. They also allowed tea to be imported to the colonies without any taxes on them. Lastly they reorganized custom services in the colonies, placing the headquarters in Boston.
These acts angered the colonists. Greatly because they could not govern themselves, but also because of the unfair taxes on the colonists. In fact the phrase no taxation without representation stemmed from this problem.
Colonists began to smuggle the goods now taxed in the Townshend Acts in order to evade the taxes. Sometimes the Colonist would be caught smuggling and would be caught by British officials. This could lead to imprisonment.
As I have written previously, these taxes angered colonists greatly. So much so that they began to protest and sometimes these protests would turn into riots. On March 5, 1770 a riot began in boston. This led to the Boston Massacre.
In order to keep up with this unrest King George Ⅲ had to send more soldiers to the colonies. Because of these difficulties Parliament repealed the townshend acts, except the act on imposing taxes on tean on March 5, 1770, the same day as the Boston Massacre.
