I think the 5 and the 8 are the semi-minor and semi-major axes
(similar to a radius of a circle)
the longer one (the 8) is the semi-major axis
(major means bigger)

but they want the major axis, which means they want the "diameter"
in other words all the way across the long way
that is 2*8 or 16
