First off, jamal, what is an "irrational number?" Have to know what you're looking for. If you have a calculator on hand, try finding the square root of all of the possible answers. What do you notice?
how to get square root @mathmale
Have a calculator?
yes
Try Sqrt(9). Then try Sqrt(99). Your calculator should have a Sqrt( key.
Sqrt(9)=? Sqrt(99)=?
it doesnt
doesn't have a square root key?
What kind of calc. do you have?
my iphone
Don't look for the word "Sqrt." Instad, look for the symbol\[\sqrt{x}\]
i see that but it was a yx−−√
oh man
I'd bet your phone does have the square root function built in, but I'm not familiar with that phone.
it was a y on it
i can use googles calc.

Yes. Type in Sqrt(9), then Sqrt(99).
3 and 9.94
Right. 3 can be written as 3/1, the ratio of two integers. That's a rational number. 9.94................, on the other hand, cannot be written as the ratio of two integers, and thus is irrational. Note that 99 = 9 * 11. 9 is rational, 11 is rational, but Sqrt(11) is irrational. You have 5 answers to choose from. Try all of them on your Google calculator. Which ones are rational and which are not?
where did you get 3 and 9 from??
@mathmale
I need for you to find the square root of all 5 of the given numbers: 10, 27, 49, 64 and 99. We've already discussed 99 and the square root of 99. The square root of 99 is irrational because the square root of the factor, 11, is irrational. List all 5 square roots and your values for them. \[\sqrt{10}=?\]
finish that and then do the remaining four. Which ones appear to be rational and which ones do not?
Please let me know in advance if you're going to log off OpenStudy in the middle of a discussion. I'm helping you voluntarily and would appreciate knowing that you appreciate my help enough to be courteous.
