OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

@3mar

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

do you know what square root is

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

sort of

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

like square root of 36 is 6x6 right?

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

what do you think it is

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

yeah so the square root of 36 is 6

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

do you know what an irrational number is

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

no

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

It is a number that does not end or repeat

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

So would 1.3333333 be a rational or irrational number?

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

rational because .3 is repeating

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Right!! So now that you know that, lets take the number 49 from your list.

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Can you find the square root of that? I'll give you a hint; it is rational.

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

7x7

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Right so the square root would just be 7

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

ok

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Lets do 64

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

8

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Those are the two that are rational. But lets find one of the irrational, just so you understand

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

How about the square root of 10?

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

idk .-.

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

The first thing that you would want to do is guess the closest whole number you can think would be the square root.

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

So it is between 3 and 4.

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Because we know that 3*3=9 and 4*4=16 and 10 is between 9 and 16

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

And it is obviously closer to three than four because ten is closer to 9 than 16

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Do you understand the reasoning here.

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

yes

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Ok good.

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Now a scientific calculator is very helpful at this point to figure out all of the numbers.

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

here's a link to one. http://web2.0calc.com/

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Just type in the number that you want to find the square root of and hit the button with the square root over the x and hit equals

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

Your answers are A,B,E

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

ok ty

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

I just wanted to make sure you understood

OpenStudy (jamaljunior):

can you help with another?

OpenStudy (skarlettrose186):

I can certainly try
