HELP
The silence in the car is difficult to bear. I turn on the radio, and music fills the air. My fingers tap to the beat on the steering wheel. The guitars vibrate so loudly, they almost seem real. I glance at my child, sleeping in his car seat. The volume goes down, and he rests, so sweet. The road stretches out before me, like a ribbon of gray. Only a few more hours, and we will find a place to stay. I begin to sing again, as a new song plays on the radio. This time, however, I detect a small echo. The volume goes down, and I listen carefully. There is another voice, and I know it is not me. Just as I begin to wonder if the car has learned to sing, I glance back to see my once-sleeping child, sweetly harmonizing.

who's brandi?
"I'm here to see Audelia Fields," Brandi said to the nurse at the reception desk. "Are you all right?" the nurse asked. "Your hands are shaking." Brandi looked down at her trembling freckled hands. Embarrassed, she closed her eyes and gulped down a pool of saliva that had collected at the back of her throat. "Yes, ma'am, thank you," she replied. "Nursing homes make me uncomfortable." "Well, she's in room 115," the nurse said with a warm smile. "Miss Audelia's birthday is tomorrow. I hope your visit with her will help you feel more comfortable." Brandi trudged down the hallway and thought to herself, Thank you, but I doubt it. She had not seen her grandmother in several years, and unpleasant childhood memories had been flooding her mind all day. She had been planning this visit for weeks, but now she wished she could disappear. When she reached room 115, her hand still shook as she formed a fist and gently knocked on the door. She heard a faint grunt in reply to her knock, so she opened the door slowly. "Is that you, Estelle?" Brandi's grandmother asked. Estelle was one of Brandi's aunts. "Hi, Grandma, it's Brandi," Brandi piped in a voice that she thought sounded too happy. "Estelle?" Brandi's grandmother asked again. Brandi took a deep breath and frowned. "Grandma, I'm Brandi," she said firmly. Why am I reminding her who I am? she thought. Maybe it's better if she doesn't remember me. "Who?" Brandi's grandmother repeated with a quivering lip. Brandi's heart melted as she saw the frightened look in her grandmother's eyes. She forgot about all the times her grandmother punished her for doing things that her siblings had actually done. She wondered if living in a nursing home was a scary experience for her. Brandi decided to try starting over in their relationship and being gentle with her grandmother. "I'm Brandi," she said with a smile and an outstretched hand. "What's your name?" "Audelia Fields," Brandi's grandmother replied with a dazed smile. "Pleased to make your acquaintance." She gripped Brandi's hand and stared at it for a moment. "You're not Estelle," Brandi's grandmother declared. "You're my granddaughter Brandi. You used to hide behind your brothers and your sisters all the time. I recognize the freckles on your hand." Brandi took a deep breath and tried to remain calm. Her grandmother made eye contact with her and grinned. "You've grown into a beautiful young woman. I'll celebrate my 83rd birthday tomorrow." "Thank you, and I know," Brandi said with a smile. Feeling relaxed, Brandi crossed her arms and noticed that her hands had finally stopped shaking.
