OpenStudy (love.1.29.16):

What is the main function of xylem tissue in the plant transport system?

OpenStudy (mangotangochick):

It is a way of transporting water and solutes from the roots to the leaves in the transpiration stream. Xylem vessels consist of dead cells. They have a thick, strengthened cellulose cell wall with a hollow lumen, whereas phloem vessels transport food substances around the plant (made in the leaves), and are made out of living cells. They are both in a structure called the vascular bundle of a plant. :)
