Generally for public speaking it's good to use visual aids when explaining something complex - also makes it more engaging! Additional research is also KEY as you don't want to go up there, be asked a question and not know what to say. Short sentences and words - I guess so. Most speeches are most engaging when it's done in a conversational style. Long, winding sentences aren't very engaging and the audience can get bogged down at times. So all of the above
