Zeronknight (zeronknight):

Hi! I've seen allot of people posting questions that aren't related to math in there. I know it's against the rules. The reason why people do it, is because. Nobody really checks the other subjects, and it's a bit annoying if it takes over 2-3 days for your question to get answered. I was wondering if we could have a "main subject". It's where you can see questions that are in any subject. Allot of new users post questions in the correct topics, but most of those subjects are referred to as "dead". So nobody answers those questions, and OS ends up losing more users in the end. Can anything be done about this? I feel like OS would keep more users if something changed.

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

I don't blame them however its not proper and not allowed. So doing so can result in some bad things if the rules are not followed C: .

Zeronknight (zeronknight):

Sorry if that seemed to suggest I was promoting breaking the rules. I didn't mean that! I am just saying why it's happening, and offering solution.

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

It seems like a promotion of doing so. Maybe if it was worded a bit differently. Reason I say its promotion is it seems like a justification with all the reason you have given.

Awolflover1 (awolflover1):

I do agree with that zeron. +1 >But it would cause more lag though.

Zeronknight (zeronknight):

@DivineSolar Hmm. Give me a second to word it out differently. Sorry! I didn't mean for it to seem like that. @Awolflover1 That's true, sadly. But OS is losing allot more in the end. You see lots of new users posting questions in the dead topics, and since nobody answered it, I feel like they would never come here again.

likeabossssssss (likeabossssssss):

i agree but there is 1 problem with it it would crate alot of lag because there is alot of ppl posting q ever min and your q will most likely still be at the bottom.

likeabossssssss (likeabossssssss):

caz like if u post there 50 other ppl post 1 sec after

OpenStudy (brainzonly):

that's true...all of you have a good point :| idk how we are going to solve this

OpenStudy (daisymaisiegh):

I like your idea also but like they all said it causes lag :( But I think the qualified helpers intuitive is helping as far as getting their questions answered if they are really in need. Even though it costs $2 >.<

OpenStudy (lowkey.s):

I mean like you can tag people? Such as @Lowkey.S

OpenStudy (daisymaisiegh):

True, But for new users that don't know anyone on OS that can't really apply.. They don't know what users have expertise in that subject and they probably don't want to just tag a random person lol

ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):

+9999

OpenStudy (lowkey.s):

^^

Zeronknight (zeronknight):

@DaisyMaisiegh True. But wouldn't you rather make a new user feel welcomed, so they keep on coming back, even if it's just for questions? Every user counts.

Directrix (directrix):

@Zeronknight I am with you on this matter. My conjecture is that we are indeed not retaining first time OS users. If my first ever OS question had been met with a reply of "You posted in the wrong section," I doubt I would have returned after that rebuff. >>> That's true, sadly. But OS is losing allot more in the end. You see lots of new users posting questions in the dead topics, and since nobody answered it, I feel like they would never come here again.

Zeronknight (zeronknight):

Mhm. That's why we should have a general subject for every topic. It may lag a bit, but it's much more worth it in the end.

likeabossssssss (likeabossssssss):

may be but not every 1 is going to get answer like the ones that get pushed to the prob elm so really u r not help to new ppl get answer cuz really it is just going to be the same but make it worst by making the site lag alot

likeabossssssss (likeabossssssss):

and there would only be 1 chat. wen 1 person spams in math chat it lags the site but if there is every 1 that talks in chats at once there be super lag lol that would make ppl leave caz nobody got time 4 lag XD

Zeronknight (zeronknight):

There doesn't have to be a major chat like that. It would cause allot of lag. It's just used for questions only, and I'd like to believe it would help. Some people will see a question they could possibly answer for a user/new user so it doesn't make them go away forever.

likeabossssssss (likeabossssssss):

i argee with that my b

OpenStudy (comrad):

hi ._.

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

I think this is a great suggestion. Brainly has a similar feature (the 'All Subjects' tab) which could be implemented here as well. Sure, it could create lag, but there may be some alternatives to combat that. One possibility could be the addition of a "Recently Asked" section which displays recently asked questions (likewise to how the "All Subjects" section does on Brainly).

Zeronknight (zeronknight):

Thank you! I think if nothing does change, OS might stay in the current state it is. I think this change would help OS grow with helpers, askers, and as a community. I mean, even if it doesn't happen asap. I hope something is done about it, rather sooner than later.

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

I agree. @5ever @BrainlyOfficial, what do you think of this idea? :)

jabez177 (jabez177):

Nice suggestion, @Zeronknight! :)

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

I remember seeing this suggestion before and agreed with it. However, the idea was set in a time where there were so many users using OS and lag was very prominent, so even the user who had suggested it agreed that it wouldn't be as necessary. Personally, I would like a better tutorial for new users instead of those blue pop-ups, like a tutorial video of sorts where new users can learn to tag people for help in other subjects...but what I think the main problem is here is the lack of helpers in other subjects other than Math. I'm no avid Math helper, and usually stick with English and History, but am currently not on top of my game and can only spend a limited time online (hence hanging out in OS Feedback). However, from my experience, there has always been many helpers (at least 5 in the past actively jumping from question post to question post that spent a lot of time with me helping others in History), and even more in English. Now that the user count has declined, especially in other subjects other than Math, well there goes the new users... As for an "All subject"...if it lags, then new users may only get frustrated by that...not that it's a bad idea, but I do want to look at potentially negative aspects. Moderation could be confusing too, because closing of posts that are confused to being placed on other subjects could lead to confusion, etc. etc. I don't want to look more into this though since I don't intend on making a debate. :3 My proposal for a change: To invite more helpers to this site that can help in other subjects other than Math only. Although some helpers are experts in multiple subjects, they tend to focus on one page of OS (such as Math...) and not the others. The main reason why people break the CoC in posting in other sections, or why new users are doing so is exactly because there aren't any attentive helpers viewing those other subjects. With a bigger helper population, those new users will hopefully stay when they see that they are getting the help they came for, and bring their friends over too.

jaynator495 (jaynator495):

I was going to read this, but then i saw the essays i would write for a response...

Directrix (directrix):

I started counting the subjects listed under the "Find More Subjects" tab. At a count of 250, I stopped although there are more. Two hundred and fifty plus (and still counting) study forums seems excessive and unnecessary.

OpenStudy (alivejeremy):

xD

OpenStudy (alivejeremy):

woooow. xD your hands must be hurting? ^^^^

OpenStudy (brainzonly):

LOL

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

No, it took me about 4 minutes to type up and think about :P

OpenStudy (alivejeremy):

lol

OpenStudy (alivejeremy):

It would probably take me like half of the day to write that. o_o

OpenStudy (alivejeremy):

and think about it.

OpenStudy (tikichu):

Maybe having one big section for all the questions would help. I mean the only section that seems to get action is Math

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

^ Well, that's mainly because we have so many math experts... XD (me not included)

OpenStudy (conqueror):

plz help medal and fan

KjSaif (kjsaif):

i know i'm off topic but @SamsungFanBoy those shoes ♥

OpenStudy (samsungfanboy):

Really

OpenStudy (conqueror):

jaynator495 (jaynator495):

JESUS PEOPLE, THESE GIANT ESSAYS... I remember when i used to post them all the time... x'D

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

I don't consider what I wrote as a lot at all...try going for an English major in college and see how you do... xD

OpenStudy (conqueror):

you could've been playing call of duty instead of writing a 10 minute essay

OpenStudy (brainzonly):

^LOL

jaynator495 (jaynator495):

Pfft, who plays call of duty? Nah, IM ALL BOUT DAT DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2 BRO

Zeronknight (zeronknight):

Could we please not go off topic? I don't want this filled with spam, thank you. @EclipsedStar That's a great solution, but a slower one. We can invite, but there's no guarantee they will stay, even if they want to, life etc, there's also no guarantee they will invite others. I think it would take a lot more time to pull it off, as population is needed, something needs to be done about it, regardless. As mentioned, brainly has something like that, and I don't think they're server lags. You can usually reduce the lag anyway. We really need something done about it, because it's a way to make the community, and helper/asking grow as well. We answer their question, they may come back, and learn about OS even more, but if they never get any help, why would they? Unlike some people, I don't know anyone who could answer those questions, and to mention the people I'm friends with, don't have time anymore. Even if that eventually works, something should be done about this, regardless. PS: History and English are semi-active, but other than that, I don't see many other subjects have people who answer questions, they are usually new people asking questions, and that's about it.

OpenStudy (conqueror):

that essay wasn't long and descriptive enough... ^ plus you forgot to cite your sources I give it a B+

OpenStudy (conqueror):

please resubmit for full credit

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Eh...ever since Brainly took over, they haven't implemented anything besides the logo and log-in page features. Not quite sure who the devs even are anymore, we haven't had any communication (mods too) with Brianly on the site we use to communicate. So I do agree with the points of how lag could possibly be reduced, but at the same time I have no idea if there are even devs looking into how our site as a whole can improve.
