AMERICA: THE REDUNDANT NATION The american government has been dealing with a numerous amount of issues and continues to face such troubles. The bulk of these complications have occurred since the emergence of the nation. Issues concerning foreign policy and the social makeup of the United States have been resonating for centuries. The only clear solution to establish a better future for America is to learn from our history, and thus resolve our national issues in the aspiration of a better future. The foreign policy that the United States has upheld is one primarily composed of continual hostilities against various groups. Cuomo assures this when he states, “Our foreign policy drifts with no real direction”(278). This precedent issue is primarily attributed to American intervention and its comparative advantage over military weapons. Taking into consideration that the United States was official formed by Englishmen and that the Indians were a foreign civilization, this issue has obviously been intrinsic to our nation since its origin. The English had imposed a set of regulations with the Indians, which reveal their self-interest motives. One of such is that the indians “should leave their bows and arrows behind them”(Bradford, 192). This regulation is one based upon American hypocrisy, as the English avoided to have mutual limitations on weaponry. In modern time, America has “spent] trillions on instruments of destruction” (Cuomo, 279). On the midst of troubles people, such as Cuomo, have been attempting to solve these issues with a united belief that “peace is better than war because life is better than death”(279). However, the government of the United States has not devoted resources to accomplish a resolution, leaving us to simply aspire. Additional enduring issues regards are social discrimination and turmoils of this nation, both as a whole and as a community. Although this nation has always been composed of various cultures and traditions there has always been certain biases amongst them. The struggle to exclude this problematic social concern has persisted long before our time. Benjamin Franklin illustrates this well when he stated, “Savages we call them, because their manners differ from ours”(218). Over the course of two centuries, this bias towards Native Americans has taken a new form attacking diversive communities including those of the hispanics and muslims. For example currently hispanics are referred to as criminals, rapists, and drug dealers, and muslims are usually unfairly accused as being associated with terrorist. Cuomo attempted solve this issue, as many have tried in the past, by expressing that a government should consist on the “idea of family, [and] mutuality”(280). Ironically this same ideology was common for many Native American tribes. Simply by studying their lifestyles, one cannot help but notice their politeness and mutual camaraderie as they had “indeed avoid[ed] disputes”(Franklin, 220). The effect of discrimination is not limited to the racial spectrum, but broadens to include religion. While this issue is intrinsic to the bases of most societies, America hasn’t learned to cope with the fact that it is a land where multi-religions converge in a supposed “free nation”. Indians faced this religious aggression as they were accused of “idol worship” which lead to the burnings of ceremonial things in the plaza. (Hoppi, 1789). This form of government imposement, has prevailed to 1984 and continues now today. Historically it was the Europeans, in the modern day it is the government that imposes direct offensives against religions of non-Christian faiths. During Reagan's presidency, Cuomo rhetorically attacked his belief that the government can “mandate people’s religion and morality”(279). Learning from our history we can observe that religion has always been disputed amongst different religious groups. By allowing the government be analogous to the English and allow the religiously oppressed to be synonymous to the Indians, we can learn of a repetitive issue; it is a form of ignorance. All in all, it is clearly visible that America has been formed upon stereotypical relations and has continued to progress in this manner, causing turmoil within its boundaries. This is an embarrassing factor for the most influential nation to uphold, portraying its utmost ignorant nature. The change must begin from within and thrust outward to form a wave-like vibration that has the capability to resonate throughout this country and reach far beyond established borders. Influential people have attempted to evoke this vibrance, such as Cuomo and other pioneers of freedom. The indians had respected the Europeans of their beliefs and lifestyles even when undergoing troublesome affairs with them. This behavior must propagate outward to the extremities of the earth. This behavior requires a social change. This behavior is a movement.
