What caused the Pullman strike and what were the results?
The major cause was job and wage cuts by George Pullman, owner of the Pullman Palace Car Company,so he could become even more obscenely rich than he already was. Effects: The government sided with Pullman, and used troops to break the strike,so an alliance between government and Robber Barons against ordinary working men began. The American Railway Union (which had called the strike) was dissolved. Pullman's 'Company town' (which exploited his workers) was declared un-American,and was annexed to Chicago,Pullman losing all control over it. Eugene Debs, who organized the strike, was jailed;while in jail he read works by Karl Marx, and became a Socialist as a result. President Cleveland introduced Labor Day as a public holiday as a sop to workers.
