Pls help, willing to learn. Analyze the range of the absolute value function

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

What are your thoughts?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

do i maybe subtract 2 by both sides?

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

should be able to figure it out by inspection

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Let's take a look. We know that an absolute value is always positive right? So what's a negative sign going to do to an absolute value?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

would it be 4?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

nothing

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

is it? if I have the |x|, then no matter if x is positive or negative, I get a positive number right? what about if I have -|x|? and what about |-x|?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

then you would get a negative number?

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

two questions right... -|x|... gives... what about |-x|?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

-|x| gives no solution right?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

@inkyvoyd

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

hmm what is -|-4|?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

+4

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

is it? how did you get there?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

because negative and a negative make a positive

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

@inkyvoyd

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

do you know what the absolute value is?

OpenStudy (gudetamas):

OpenStudy (gudetamas):
