I don't know, BUT the opera "Madama Butterfly" is set in Japan and deals with the US violation of cio cio san (butterfly) and her humiliation at the hands of an american "merchant" called "pinkerton". 
Having rethought, i'd go for shinto as the answer 'cos it looks as though it might be Japanese.
