What is the purpose of the turbines in coal-fired power plants?

converting energy. coal burns and heats water to steam. steam makes turbines rotate. that rotation is in a magnetic field as in it is a DYNAMO (albeit a v v big one). rotation plus magnetic field generates electricity. electricity is conducted to a grid system and "piped" to the hapless ripped off consumer who has v little choice in the matter.
