The Reefs, by Marcella Morris has a theme of how a girl determined to keep the safety of the coral reefs. Sophie went on a snorkeling trip to the coral reefs and saw that they were getting destroyed and decided that she was going to help the reefs survive. She asked her professors if she could get the lab time to solve this problem and they said no and they warned her and told her that she was just a high school student and what makes you think that you can solve this crucial environmental issue. She was so determined to solve this that she spent her own money on equipment and set it up in her aunt’s house and for day after day night after night trying to solve this problem. So, when it came to the time to show her professors her innovative approach so was so nerves that she sat outside the doors of the school debating if she should go in and show her hard work or just give it all up and go home but before she gave up her friend Sam who was with her while she was doing her test and was one of her main supporters walked up to her and said “ Let’s go in and…show them…what you’ve got”. So, Sophie and Sam walked in confidently and presented her work. When her presentation ended, it was to the enthusiastic sound of the scientists’ applause. After that she knew that all the hours and hard work that was put in to this was worth it. So, that is my summery of the reefs and why I think the theme of this story is a girl determined to keep the safety of the coral reefs.
