double entry book keeping and accounting was started in Italy for "more efficient trading records".
insurance for traders whose ships faced, being sunk basically, bred the insurance industry.
in the shakespeare play "the merchant of venice", there's a sequence in which someone in an italian court demands "a pound of flesh" (lethal, basically). A "lawyer" says, yes, you can have your pound of flesh, but you must not take any blood.
Overtures at the beginnings of "legal wrangling" which I think we're all fairly aware of in 2016.

possibly used "chastity belts" to stop them having "promiscuous sex", thereby protecting them from possibly dangerous pregnancies (an adolescent getting pregnant may not be good for two people's health).
if women were put in convents then they would have been "out of harm's way" ... albeit imprisoned.
