When you're looking for an antagonist in the story, you can find out who they are by looking for their personality or the relationship they have with the protagonist. For example, if I were the antagonist of a story and you were the protagonist, I would more than likely have a poor relationship with you because I'm the bad person of the story. Also, as you go on in a story {reading wise}, you can see events that happened in the beginning of the story which can help you understand why the antagonist actually became the bad person or see what triggered the change in personality.

The antagonist can be the main character or the villain, it's a person/thing that causes the problem in the story or has specific characteristics that makes them against the protagonist:)
