Why was General Thomas J. Jackson anointed with hero status after the Battle of Bull Run? Jackson was a Virginian, and newspapers were looking for one of their own to idolize and proclaim a savior of the Southern cause. Jackson was able to get his men to stand and fight when everyone else around them was beginning to retreat. General Robert E. Lee's comparison of Jackson and his men to a "stone wall" rallied his troops and made a great story. Jackson was able to defeat the Confederate army.
