What do you use quotation marks around?

OpenStudy (cecil_the_weasel):

"What do you use quotation marks around?" inquired keeni79887. You use quotations around something that someone is saying. You will also use quotations around titles of articles, chapters, song names, and stuff like that- shorter works. For example, an article named "The Biology of Defecation" by Lynn H. Porter. Though rules on this may depend on teacher preference or citation formats. Just ask your teacher about this one if you aren't sure.

OpenStudy (osprey):

When you are quoting something ? Either someone yakking (plenty of that happens) and you are writing it exactly as it was spoken, or when you want to copy what someone wrote word for word and indicate that it's someone else's words you are using.

eclipsedstar (eclipsedstar):

Also, quotations can be used to emphasize something, or for ironic purposes once in a while.
