B and normally plotted on the horizontal axis of a graph, whilst the DEPENDENT variable normally goes up the VERTICAL axis. y=f(x) is one of the maths ways of writing it. and eg would be y=2x. You select values of x (independent v) and double them to get y. (dependent on x). Straight line through the point x=0 y=0 if it all works out nicely.
