Some of the problems they faced was always worrying about the empire falling like Rome did. After Rome fell, the Byzantine Empire was a strong empire and the capital, Constantinople, was the jewel during its time. It had huge walls to defend it and the empire had a great navy. But, the empire finally met its downfall when other tribes began attacking it and eventually tooken over by the Turks.
