A basic idea of economics is specialization. People do what they are good at. They trade with other people for the things that they need.
When countries have a certain resource, a lot of the people specialize along lines of that resource. For instance, if a country has lots of gold, much of the population could be involved in mining, processing and shipping gold.
But that also means that those people aren't farming or producing other goods. So the country needs to trade for bananas, salt and cars.
If no other country would trade with them, they wouldn't survive.
