Poverty in Victorian England
The quality of life during the Victorian times depended on whether you were rich or poor.
Wealthy Victorians enjoyed a good and easy life, but poor Victorians had a rough and hard life, often ending up in the workhouse or early death.
The Poor The Wealthy

• Lived in damp, filthy conditions.
• Many children died of disease. • Usually well fed, clean and well clothed.

Why were so many people living in poverty?
In the 19th century, rapid changes in employment, housing and social welfare brought about a huge change in people’s lives. The period of adjustment led to many workers living in extreme poverty and even dying on city streets of starvation in Victorian times. The population of Great Britain actually increased during the 19th century.
The reason for this increase is not very clear, but various ideas have been put forward such as:
• larger families
• more children surviving infancy
• people living longer
• Immigration, especially large numbers of immigrants coming from Ireland fleeing the potato famine and the unemployment situation in their own country.
Homeless Children
These conditions affected children as well as adults. There were children living with their families in these desperate situations but there were also numerous, homeless, destitute children living on the streets of London. Many children were turned out of home and left to fend for themselves at an early age and many more ran away because of ill treatment.
In her book The Victorian town child, Pamela Horn writes: ‘In 1848 Lord Ashley referred to more than thirty thousand 'naked, filthy, roaming lawless and deserted children, in and around the metropolis' '
Why did people have to live in workhouses and what were these places like?
Workhouses were where poor people who had no job or home lived. They earned their keep by doing jobs in the workhouse.
Also in the workhouses were and abandoned children, the physically and mentally sick, and the disabled, the elderly and unmarried mothers. Workhouses were often very large and were feared by the poor and old.
Women, children and men had different living and working areas in the workhouse, so families were split up. To make things even worse they could be punished if they even tried to speak to one another!
The education the children received did not include the two most important skills of all, reading and writing, which were needed to get a good job.
The poor were made to wear a uniform. This meant that everyone looked the same and everyone outside knew they were poor and lived in the workhouse. Upon entering the workhouse, the poor were stripped and bathed.
The food was tasteless and was the same day after day. The young and old as well as men and women were made to work hard, often doing unpleasant jobs. Children could also find themselves hired out to work in factories or mines.
