OpenStudy (estxmadxj0ker):

What is an advantage of using fruit flies to study genetics?

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

So fruit flies are used to study genetics because the majority of the traits that will be observed are discrete traits meaning that only 2 alleles determine the phenotype, rather than many alleles. This means that you can look at things like their eyes, body color, body shape, etc. to determine heritance of their genes in their offspring. Fruit flies also have extremely short life-spans and produce lots of children. This is important because you can have a generation that quickly reproduces and be able to observe their children. Also the smaple size is large, which allow for a better representation of the allele and phenotypic frequencies to be observed.

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

Please let me know if you need any more clarification about that.

OpenStudy (estxmadxj0ker):

Which of the following statements is true of nondisjunction? A. Nondisjunction means “not coming apart.” B. Nondisjunction is caused by chromosome pairs that fail to separate correctly. C. Nondisjunction occurs when pieces of chromosomes break off and get lost. D. Both A and B are true of nondisjunction.

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

D. both A and B

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

Nondisjunction means that a chromosome fails to come apart when homologous chromosomes split during mitosis

OpenStudy (estxmadxj0ker):

The following phenotypes are seen after mating: 400 tall/blue 200 tall/green 200 short/blue 400 short/green If the tall/green and short/blue phenotypes are recombinant, what is the linkage distance for these genes? A. 3.0 LMU B. 6.0 LMU C. 33.3 LMU D. 66.7 LMU btw, thank you lots for the help.

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

I am actually not sure on the distance of linkage for that. Try asking it as a separate question and see if anyone can help. But if I had to give you some logic for this question, you can see that with the information given that there are no recombinants happening, so they would have to assume that they are relatively close in distance.

OpenStudy (estxmadxj0ker):

Which of the following is a genetic disorder carried by a recessive allele that can cause severe mental retardation if a strict diet is not followed and affects approximately one child out of every 15,000? A. Huntington disease B. Tay-Sachs C. PKU D. Cystic fibrosis

@EstxMadxJ0ker Hello there. Please only ask one question per question. So for each new question, close the previous question, medal (as needed), and open a new one. Thank you so much! :)
