Read the passage. Arduous Journey It had been weeks since the villagers had asked Patrick, one of the few able-bodied boys who was of age, to make the arduous journey to the king’s land. War and famine had ravaged his village, but Patrick knew that few could survive a journey alone so far into such strange lands. The thought caused his skin to crawl and kept him up at nights when he should have been gathering rest. When another attack on their village destroyed most of their remaining provisions, Patrick realized that he could no longer deny his duty to his people. Someone had to go for help, and he was the strongest boy left. First he had to cross the fierce-flowing, wide river—and like most of his inland village, Patrick had never learned to swim. I’m going to have to do this somehow, he told himself. With trepidation he stepped to the water’s edge, forcing himself to go forward. “What are you waiting for?” said an impatient voice at his side. It was a strange-looking man in a pointy, floppy, green hat that only reached the height of Patrick’s waist. His voice became kinder. “Hop onto my shoulders.” The little man’s shoulders looked as if they could barely support a rabbit. But as soon as Patrick hopped on, he found himself surging through the water, his arms alternating strokes as if he’d been swimming all his life. Reaching the far shore, Patrick clutched his knees and caught his breath. “Thank—“ he began to say, but when he looked around, the little man was not there. Shrugging, Patrick walked on. Soon the forest closed in around him, and in the distance he heard a deep, rumbling growl such as he had never heard before. “So this is what it’s going to be like,” Patrick said to himself. He took a deep breath, and marched staunchly forward.
How does the distant roar in the forest at the end of the story contribute to the story's archetypal impact? It implies that the hero's journey will be filled with dangerous obstacles and tests. It indicates that the hero's path to his goal has been prepared in advance. It demonstrates that the hero will be capable of overcoming all his challenges. It shows that there are aspects of the journey that the hero will never fully understand.
