So, prometaphase is just the process in between prophase and metaphase where they get ready to line up. So during this time, the DNA has already duplicated itself from interphase, so 46 individual chromosomes x 2 = # of chromosomes during prometaphase
Then ones you separate those homologous pairs, you get back to your original number, or # of chromosomes during prometaphase / 2
