We are told that there are 20 pens in total. We know of `Ten of the pens are black and 8 are blue` but we are unknown as to how many pens are red. To find that we subtract 20 by the sum of black and blue pens. \(\huge\bf{20-(10+8) = \color{red}{red}} \rightarrow 2 = \color{red}{red}\) So we are finding the ratio of `red pens to black pens` we must write it out in this order. We know there are `10 black pens` and `2 red pens`. \(\huge\bf{\color{red}{2}:10}\) So we simplify by GCF. 10 is divisible by 2 so we divide each side by 2. \(\huge\bf{\color{red}{1}:5}\) This is the ratio.
