I was told to tell my story. At first, I thought, Well how hard could it be? 
Believe it or not, really hard. 
My story. What is my story? Sure, there are tons of things I could write about. Or that I should write about. But am I going to? No. 
I'm going to talk about not just me, but us. Us as a state, as a country, as a society, a generation. 
If we keep going in the direction we're going, we will be remembered for nothing. 
We will be classified as "The generation that accomplished nothing". 
Because we did nothing but invent selfie sticks. 
Previous generations have split atoms, discovered fire. 
We have done nothing memorable. 
We will be the society that everyone tries to forget. 
But for everything bad thing being done, there are good things happening. 
We're getting closer. 
It might not feel like it. 
But everyday is a day where we are closer to world peace. 
Discovering time travel. 
We are the society who has done nothing. 
Yet.

What specifically is this intended to be? Like is it in terms written as a poem, an essay, short piece, etc?

I love ur style of writing just as @Klark mentioned. I think you just need to change ur last 2 sentences because it doesnt make much sense with the topic u were going for

I would actually add more descriptive adjectives. So, it  will be  more helpful for the reader to delve into your story. Or you may actually turn to the professional writers from MArvelosu essay and let them proofread it for you. I often use it and I can surely tell you that you can trust it
