OpenStudy (21savvy):

Use of the filibuster is much more frequent today than it was in the past. This is partly because the majority party does not have enough votes to invoke the cloture rule. At present, the Republicans only control 54 seats in the senate, and they would need 60 to limit the use of the filibuster. This will likely continue in the future until the majority party holds at least 60.
