Given the diagram shown, prove or disprove that angle 2 > angle 1

OpenStudy (seratul):

Do you think angle 2 is bigger or smaller than angle 1? It's okay if you don't know.

OpenStudy (exoexoexo):

I'm not sure because it can either be bigger, smaller, or congruent

OpenStudy (seratul):

Alright. I think the best way to figure this out is by putting in angle values for x y and w. Lets say x is 60 and y is 60, what is the value of w?

OpenStudy (seratul):

Remember, all angles of a triangle equal to 180.

OpenStudy (exoexoexo):

w= 60

OpenStudy (seratul):

Correct. Now, for the smaller triangle, is seems that both x and y are cut in about half. What would that make the measure of angle z (angle 1) equal to?

OpenStudy (seratul):

In other words, would the value of angle 1 be bigger than angle 2?

OpenStudy (seratul):

Are you confused?

OpenStudy (exoexoexo):

I'm pretty confused because I think I should be solving this using the theorems for exterior and interior angles of a triangle

OpenStudy (seratul):

Hmm, i'm not sure if I remember the theorems for exterior and interior angles. Maybe someone else can finish helping you. I'm sorry.

OpenStudy (exoexoexo):

thank you for the help though :)
