you read the marks on the slide ruler in order to determine the larger measurements like inch and 1/10 in (or cm and mm) the dial is used in order to determine the more precise measurement which you add onto the larger measurement, it measures maybe 1/100 in or 1/1000 in or increments smaller than millimeters You need to look at the caliper specifically to determine that the increment the dial gives is since some of them might give a full revolution of the dial as .005 m
