What is the purpose of political machines?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):
A boss or small group of leaders have power over all the people in the machine to produce a desired result. Usually the result is voting for a specific candidate or cause. The people who get out the vote or produce the results get rewarded for their effort. A machine looks to be legal but sometimes uses intimidation, physical violence and such to get the political will of the boss done. It is tyranny masquerading as democracy.
