Which statement is true? A. |–12| = –12 B. |–4| < 3 C. |–5| > 0 D. |–8| < |8|

OpenStudy (skullcandy):

Its only one answer, in my option i think its D.

OpenStudy (lyss):

|| turns negative numbers to just natural numbers (sans the "-" symbol) A states that 12 is equal to -12. false. B states that 4 is less than 3. false. C states that 5 is greater than 0. true. D states that 8 is less than 8. false.

OpenStudy (lyss):

C is correct. Not D.

OpenStudy (skullcandy):

Hmm, i believe but i had my hopes up because i thought -8 < 8 because 8 is a greater number then -8.

OpenStudy (lyss):

Yes. 8 is greater than -8. But in this problem, it's the absolute value of -8. Making it just 8, not -8. Turns it into this: 8<8 which is false, because 8=8

OpenStudy (skullcandy):

Oh! Thank you. I understand now.

OpenStudy (lyss):

:D
