Please help to explain how to solve:

OpenStudy (andrewishere):

\[(x-2)/(x-1)^2= 0\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You're doing fine if "solving" the equation is all you have to do. If x-2=0, what is x? However, note that this rational function is undefined if x=1. Again i ask you to clarify what you are supposed to do.

OpenStudy (andrewishere):

I am just supposed to find the value of x. I do know the answer is x=2 by just knowing, but I never really understood the steps to get there. What happened to the denominator?

OpenStudy (andrewishere):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

When you set that fraction = to 0, you are actually setting only the numerator = to 0. That gives you x=2. End. |dw:1479257946206:dw|

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Sorry, but I need to get off the 'Net. Perhaps we'll work together again later on.

Thank you for your time.
