what did the Ancient Romans use diptychs and triptychs for?

Diptychs were two panels of equal size, joined together by a device which was usually a hinge. It was like a notebook, before the papyrus's (paper) of Egyptian times existed. Usually a stylus would be used to write on it, it was for writing. Triptychs were 3 panels, joined together by a hinge, for the same purpose. They were both used for educational purposes, like notebooks, of the ancient times to record stuff.
