they did so mostly during the nara period of japan, they copied from the tang dynasty of china, Im not entirely sure off the top of my head WHY they did, but probably because they found it intriguing or something

puppies is right. Also it's natural for a culture to borrow from neighbors. Especially a large neighbor. The Japanese migrated from China. Probably down the Korean peninsula. The current stock of Japanese people wiped out the Anu culture with their own. It is unique from other Chinese inspired cultures because of it isolation.
