There three basic things you have to know when adding binary numbers, and those are:

1 + 1 = 0 carry 1
1+ 0 = 1
0 + 1 = 1


for you question you start with the very first bit:


Next, 1 + 1 + 1 would be 1 carry 1 (which is equivalent to 3 in decimals)
