Why not subdivide the base? Consider the subintervals [0.5,1.5], [1.5,2.5], [2.5,3.5] (and one more). This results in your obtaining four approximating trapezoids. Use the "area of a trapezoid" formula to approx. the area of each trap. Then add your four subareas together. That's the desired approx. you wantetd.
