The Political Impact that Colleges Have on Students
To commence change in our country, American citizens are going to have to come up with an organized approach. In Obama's commencement speech at Howard University, he states “When we don’t vote, we give away our power, disenfranchise ourselves.” One of the most important things that we can do as citizens in a democracy is to vote. Yet, for our votes to be accurate, it is crucial that we educate our youth, especially the young adults who are new to the voting system, about politics, especially regarding social issues. Obama’s speech to Howard University graduates, covers a lot of these specific strategies that should be implemented in our daily lives, as the newer generation of American citizens.
First, the president notes that “America is in a better place for change than it was when I graduated college.” This generation is in the best position for change ever. To advance our current state of affairs in America, we must address the progress that America has made thus far. Obama briefly states that “the election itself was just an indicator of how attitudes changed.” Throughout history we have overcame many things due to voting and standing up for our rights.
Although Obama emphasized how far blacks have came in his speech, he also tried to bring his audience's attention to all of the other important social changes in America in the last 60 years.Some of the progress that Obama mentions include marriage equality being legal in over two dozen countries, one billion people have been lifted from extreme poverty, crime rates are down, there are more women in the work force, and there are more americans with degrees than ever before.
After Obama lists the changes and adversities that American has rendered, he begins to talk about the challenges we have yet to vanquish. This includes climate change, terrorism, disease, and of lingering conflicts from the past.
Obama ends his speech by suggesting ways that this new generation of adults can conquer these misfortunes that America faces today. Given that his speech is concerning blacks, he begins by saying that the first step to change is being proud of your heritage. He adds that is is imperative to question the world as it is. We must empathise with people who are struggling in order to get in their heads and realize what corrections we need to make,
“To bring about structural change, lasting change, awareness is not enough.” Obama says. We must make a bring about an adjustment to legislation and in our customs. Find out who is in charge of the law and influence them as best as you can. Despite the oppression in the voting system, Our plans for American advancement must include voting all the time.
Colleges are a breeding ground for America’s future. A place where students obtain the crucial information they will rely on to survive in modern society. The fundamental mission for colleges is to develop active citizens concerned with public obligation and with addressing social responsibilities.
American colleges should essentially be held accountable for teaching students that each of their votes matter. Classrooms need to be strategically set up for co-curricular discussion to pave a way for students to ultimately feel like their opinion and beliefs are significant.
Implementing politically based courses and coursework would be a huge factor in overturning the denial that this generation holds towards voting. Engaging in Politically based classes would help to give students a more educated vote overall, leading to a chance at a higher educated American democracy.
Since America is a democracy, the votes from the people are substantial in creating a society that runs in the favor of the people. Which means that when students vote they are taking part in one of the largest aspects of their lives. The education that we are providing for our students should include classes such as government, US history, social studies, and classes that specifically target the fundamentals of voting and being an active member of society. Campuses should be required to host activities to assure that students do not have an excuse for not voting.
