Usually x is used instead of y, but anyways, you replace every copy of y with the given input value For instance, with f(-2) we replace every copy of y with -2 \[\Large f(y) = y+y^2 - 3\] \[\Large f({\color{red}{y}}) = {\color{red}{y}}+{\color{red}{y}}^2 - 3\] \[\Large f({\color{red}{-2}}) = {\color{red}{-2}}+({\color{red}{-2}})^2 - 3\] \[\Large f(-2) = -2+4-3\] \[\Large f(-2) = -1\] Hopefully this makes sense?

thanks! It did
