"you said try adding 4 to the x's" No, I said: replace x with 4, i.e put x=4 and it seems that the problem need to be more clarified as you wrote: "when Jess is at a distance of p meters from the hoop", because I don't know what does \(\color{red}p\) stand for? It may stand for \(\color{red}x\) or \(\color{red}y\), so you would better to tell the whole question in order to understand what is the required exactly! And Sorry again for being late!
