Help with 2 part question, who's with me =)
You know about the vertical line test. If you see a graph of a relation, using the vertical line test you can easily tell whether the relation is a function or not. Now you need to find out if a relation is a function based on a table of x and y values.
It is also very simple. If each x-coordinate value appears only once, it is a function. If you see the same x-coordinate used more than once, it is not a function. The same x-coordinate used more than once would generate points along the same vertical line, so the relation would fail the vertical line test and would not be a function.
What are the x-coordinates in Part 1?
-2 0 2 4
Great. Are the x-coordinates all different numbers, or do you see the same number more than once?
different
Then what do you conclude, function or not function?
Reminder of what was written above: "If each x-coordinate value appears only once, it is a function. If you see the same x-coordinate used more than once, it is not a function."
FUnction
Correct. Now can you do part 2 on your own?
For Part 2, do you get function or not function?
It is not a function
Correct. Great job!
