How did the Freedom Rides differ from the Freedom Summer? Freedom Rides were nonviolent actions, while the Freedom Summer resulted in numerous race riots. Freedom Rides were a series of symbolic protests, while the Freedom Summer was a series of mass protests. Freedom Rides were largely conducted by African Americans, while the Freedom Summer was led by white activists. Freedom Rides were aimed at ending segregation, while the Freedom Summer was aimed at expanding voting rights.
