Money as in currency came about as an easy medium of exchange. Back in the day before money there was bartering, which is trading one thing for another such as a box of apples for a cow. This became a pain as a box of apples is hard to compare to a cow and each are hard to carry around with you. So currency was invented, in the beginning it varied from place to place what currency was made of, in east Africa it was sea shells, in Europe it was gold and silver coins and in the East it was bronze and silk. But eventually most of the world used gold and silver as their currency.
