the difference between a democracy and a republic is that in a democracy everyone has direct say in every government decision (this has the benefit of giving everyone equal voice in what the government does, but has the issues of falling into "mob rule" and everyone would be too busy voting to actually get anything done) while a republic everyone votes on people to represent them to make the majority of the decisions for them (this has the benefit of allowing people to not spend so much time with voting, but has the side effect of people tend to not keep a close enough eye on the people they vote for and they end up becoming corrupt).
