OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

Find the area of the figure. Assume the figure is made up of triangles. A. 98 cm² B. 147 cm² C. 196 cm² D. 294 cm²

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Hello! I am pretty good with area and I used to be in k12 too! What grade are you in? ^_^

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

i am in 6th grade

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Oh nice! Alright, this question might look a bit tricky but try and break it down to pieces like a puzzle alright? First, try and see how many triangles you see in the shape.

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

i see 4 triangles

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Yes! Good job! So, there are four triangles and two of them have the same measurements as the other two. Let me show you.

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

ok

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

See, here

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

The triangles are sharing the same side length and base length

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Do you know the fourmula for the area of a triangle?

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

*formula

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

In case you forgot, the fourmula for the area of a triangle is: \[A=\frac{ b * h }{ 2 }\] the A stands for Area, b for base, and h for height.

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

So let's try and get the area of the blue triangle first ok?

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

You with me so far? @kaedaaguirr ?

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

If you're stuck somewhere, feel free to let me know ^_^

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

i am here

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Alright! Do you want to try and get the area for the blue triangle first or do you want me to show you how to do it first and then you can try the other triganle?

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

*triangle

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

can you show me how i know the formula

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Alright! :D

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

i just dont know what to do

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

So we have the height of the blue triangle and it's base so, we plug in those numbers to the formula and simplify! \[A=\frac{ 7 * 7 }{ 2 }\] 7 * 7 = 49 so now we have this \[A=\frac{ 49 }{ 2 }\] Now, divide 49 by 2 and you'll gett 24.5 as your area for the blue triangle! Got it so far? :)

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

yes

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Alright so now that you have the area of the blue triangle, and the red triangle has the same measurements as the blue triangle, what do you think the area of the red triangle will be?

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

24.5

OpenStudy (kaedaaguirr):

is that right

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Yes! Good job!

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

So now, add those two together. 24.5 + 24.5 = ?

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Go ahead, you got it! ^_^

OpenStudy (kaedaaguir):

so the answer is 49

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

For the red and blue triangles yes! Now we are half way done with the question! We have the other two triangles to do. Want to give it a try? It's the same as the red and blue triangles we just did. ^_^ If you're having trouble, just let me know and I'll help ya! :D

OpenStudy (kaedaaguir):

ok

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Here's the two other triangles to help you ^_^

OpenStudy (kaedaaguir):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

No problem! Take your time! ^_^

OpenStudy (kaedaaguir):

i was thinking letter d is that right

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Not quite. Where did you have trouble on with the other two triangles? I'll walk you through. ^_^

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Let's go over it again together ok? :)

OpenStudy (kaedaaguir):

ok

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Let's do the same thing that we did with the red and blue triangles. Let's find the area of the yellow triangle first. \[A=\frac{ 7 * 14 }{ 2 }\] 7 * 14 = 98 so now we have this \[A=\frac{ 98 }{ 2 }\] Now, divide 98 by 2 to get the area of the yellow triangle and you'll get what? Try that part yourself ok? ^_^ If you need help, I'm here!

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

OpenStudy (yato_gami):

Did you get your answer? Having trouble?

OpenStudy (kaedaaguir):

yes i am having truble

OpenStudy (kaedaaguir):

i got 49
