When considering a 3:1 ratio, visualize four equal parts, e., g., 4 equal parts from x=2 to x=8. Note how I have added 3 and 1 to get 4. What is the straight line distance from 2 to 8? Multiply that distance by 1/4. Add this result to x=2. That will give you the x-coordinate of a point which is 1/4 of the way from (2,8) to (8,5). x-coordinate in question will be 2 + (1/4)(distance from x=2 to x=8). What is this?
