All we have is: Answer: Juan's goals changed drastically towards the end of the story. In the beginning of the story, Juan only wanted the job in order to intercept the letter that he had sent to Mariana. By the end of the story Juan has become almost obsessed with his job and has forgotten the real reason he wanted the job in the first place and got absorbed in the job.
reason: The author foreshadows the ending by showing the other workers having “accidents” and nothing happened to him yet
He had many streaks of luck by getting promotions and not having an “accident” ran out
Evidence: paragraph 6 “Little by Little Juan was absorbed by his job”
